Abstract

Water pollution and water scarcity are global challenges with serious consequences for ecosystems, human health and the economy. Conventional wastewater-treatment methods are often insufficiently effective or economically unsuitable for removing persistent emerging pollutants, including textile dyes, pesticides, phenols and microplastics. The INMAT project aims to develop innovative nanomaterials and hybrid technologies for wastewater treatment. Two principal approaches will be investigated. The first employs gamma radiation from disused sealed radioactive sources to drive advanced oxidation processes in the presence of nanocatalysts. The second is based on magnetic hyperthermia and multifunctional magnetic nanocatalysts that promote the generation of reactive radicals and localised heating, thereby increasing pollutant-degradation efficiency. The nanomaterials will be prepared using sustainable methods, including mechanosynthesis and microwave-assisted precipitation, and comprehensively characterised in terms of their structural, surface, catalytic, magnetic and thermal properties. The degradation mechanisms, the role of reactive oxygen species, and the influence of operating conditions on nanocatalyst efficiency and long-term stability will be investigated. The combination of advanced oxidation processes, magnetic hyperthermia and gamma irradiation is expected to provide highly efficient wastewater-treatment strategies while contributing to the reduction of radioactive waste through the reuse of disused sealed radioactive sources.
